ACEPHALE.ORG / Home

acephale.org is the personal website of MICHAEL LANE. I am a US citizen, though lately I seem to split my time between the United States, Britain, and Greece. I was born in Virginia, raised in Missouri, but my adoptive home on the west side of the Pond is Baltimore, and on the east side, Sheffield.

The website is fairly simple in its present form; see the links above. It's an outlet for my diverse interests, not just for my arcane specialism in the Greek bronze age and the Linear B script. These interests range from political activism to "bio-safety" to cooking and martial arts. Have a look at a version of my CV, if you're curious. You'll find miscellaneous examples of my writing here, which I try to update every few months. There's also a page of miscellaneous links, including those to friends' websites, resources relevant to the interests described above, and some things just for a laugh.

I took the domain name acephale.org a few years ago, when I went through an episode of keen interest in the work of the 20th-century French writer, philosopher and sometimes Surrealist Georges Bataille, particularly his short-lived, expressly anti-fascist movement / magazine "l'Acéphale," in which he explored the possibility of reconciling the philosophies of Nietzsche and Marx.

Lest there be some mistake, I'm no specialist in Bataille's philosophical speculations, nor necessarily a champion of them. But the notion of reconciling different philosophical approaches that do justice to the scales and complexities of human action and experience -- both rational and irrational -- abides with me. Not to mention the concept of justice. Besides, "acéphale" has connotations I enjoy. You can learn more about Bataille in all his peculiarities and perversities here.

I can be contacted at 2113 St Paul St., 3rd floor, Baltimore, MD 21218, UNITED STATES, and on telephone +1 443-610-4924 and Email mflane@acephale.org.
