I think this poem should be an important meditation for our time and, in its last stanza, even a credo. It seems eerily prescient, but then so do many writings that have been carefully considered. My sister Helen, who lives in New York, sent it to me a couple of days after the September 11 terrorist attacks.
An invaluable resource for leftwing political activists, sister project of the independent left monthly Z Magazine. A bit overwhelming at first, since it seems to have a buzzillion links on the homepage. However, it is usefully divided into sections, and is full of good primary sources, well documented secondary sources and political analysis and critique.
Established during the anti-IMF demonstrations in Seattle in 1999 by activists who were fed up with the corporate media's coverage of political protest, this movement has spread like wildfire, with scores of centres in every corner of the globe now. (Look at the left-hand links column on this homepage.)
The New York City site is well run, and it publishes its own print newspaper, The Indypendent / El Independiente (also downloadable as a PDF file).
My "homes" on both sides of the Atlantic also have good websites: Baltimore and Sheffield. (My friend Spud created the software that runs both the New York and Baltimore sites.)
Naomi Klein's site. She's one of the best essayists on the left out there right now. She's published in The Nation and The Guardian (UK), among other places.
The website of the political activist, essayist, and book author, George Monbiot (pronounce the T). His columns also appear in The Guardian, and among his recent, important books is Heat about the human contribution to contemporary global warming.
"... a multi-racial alliance of feminist activists, health practitioners and scholars. We are committed to promoting the social and economic empowerment of women in a context of global peace and justice; and to eliminating poverty, inequality, racism, and environmental degradation". My friend Sarah Bortt (aka "Trash O'Brat") is involved in this organization. (Sarah makes nice soap, by the way.)
A brilliant source of well documented, well argued, non-partisan reports on human rights abuses around the world.
"Global on-line communication for a democratic, independent labor movement". Links to the the UK's LabOUrNet and other international sites.
A seeding organisation for combating oppression and exploitation according to age, gender, race, sexual orientation, class and degree of formal education -- aimed especially at empowering young women.
Some somewhat dated biosafety papers of mine (in HTML format) and related links. From the old acephale.org site.
